Entertaiment is a term used to describe an activity that is enjoyable or fun and may also provide pleasure or amusement. It may also have a deeper or serious purpose – for example, in religious festivals or satire. Some activities, such as hunting or war, develop into spectator sports. Others, such as cooking or sports, become professional performances staged for a global audience. The ability of entertainment to cross over different media is demonstrated by the way that stories like Scheherazade, a tale from the professional storytelling tradition, can inspire a work by composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov or Ravel; film directors including Pasolini and Woody Allen; and innovative video games.
